Tips on Moving with Children

Moving with children

Moving can be stressful for adults, but for children it can be downright traumatic. If you have children and you are planning to move soon, here are a few simple tips to make the transition easier for everyone involved:

Talk to your kids. They may react negatively at first, but it’s important to be honest with them and let them know what’s coming so they’ll have enough time to get used to the idea and sort out their feelings. Make sure they hear it from you, as it may make them angry if they hear it from a neighbor or someone else.

Involve them in the process. After you’ve broken the news to them, make them feel involved by asking them their opinion and enlisting their help in packing, especially if they’re older. If you haven’t chosen a home in your new neighborhood yet, get their input and ask them which of your choices they think your family would be most comfortable in. Once you’ve moved, let them choose their new rooms or let them have a their own space where they can play, study or just hang out.

Younger children should be kept out of the way during moving day, but kids enjoy packing if you know how to make it fun. Have them help color-code boxes, a different color for each room. Help them sort out their clothes and toys and decide which ones they want to keep and which ones they can donate or put in a yard sale.

You could have some kind of goodbye party or informal celebration before you move. For very young children, you could take them to their favorite places in the neighborhood such as the park and have them say goodbye.

During the drive to your new home, you could stop by fun places along the way or stay at a nice hotel with a pool if your budget permits. Moving with family isn’t always easy, but if you do it right, you can start everyone off on the right foot and make it fun for the whole family.
