How to Stage Your Home

If you are planning to sell your home, home staging is one tried and tested thing you can do to make sure it sells faster and for more. Your real estate agent can probably put you in touch with a reputable professional home stager, but if you want to try staging your home yourself, you won’t have to spend too much money to do so. Here are a few cost-effective ways you can get your home ready to sell and looking fabulous:

1. The first step is to de-clutter your entire home from top to bottom. The goal is to impress potential buyers with your HOUSE, not to overwhelm them with your STUFF. Too much stuff can distract a potential home buyer and make your home seem much smaller and more cramped than it really is. If you think you have too many things, this is the perfect opportunity to get rid of all the useless or outdated junk you might have lying around. Clean out your closets, cabinets, counter tops and bookshelves and put everything away in boxes or in storage. Consider having a garage sale or donating the things you don’t want or no longer use anymore. If you want to keep everything, at least you’ve already put them away and that will make moving day that much easier. Don’t just get rid of your stuff; consider putting bulky pieces of furniture in storage too. Walk through every room in your house and decide whether they would look better or more spacious if you took out a few pieces of furniture that take up too much space.

2. After de-cluttering your home, the next step is to de-personalize it. When potential home buyers walk into your home, they want to be able to imagine themselves living in it, so seeing all your personal effects such as family portraits and random knickknacks can make it harder for them to do that. Pack these items away and try and make your home feel as neutral and “generic” as possible.

3. Make good use of lighting and mirrors to make your home seem bigger, brighter and just generally more inviting. Mirrors placed along hallway walls and above fireplaces create an illusion and make rooms appear bigger than they really are. Intelligent use of table lamps and overhead lighting can either brighten up a room and make it more cheerful or add a dramatic flair or create a moody ambiance.
