How to Make a Great Impression at Your Open House

Hosting an open house is a lot like speed dating in that you often only have a few minutes to make a great first impression on a potential buyer before they move on to the next showing. To make them stop in their tracks and consider lingering for longer in your home, you may need to go above and beyond. Here are a few easy ways to do so.

1. Depersonalize your home. This is so important because when buyers are viewing a home, they naturally try and imagine themselves and their children or family living in it. They try and picture what their own furniture would look like in the house, and where they would put their belongings. It makes it harder for them to do this if you have your own family photos and knickknacks everywhere. Put those away, and be sure not to forget any religious, political or NSFW items while you’re at it.

2. Keep your home exceptionally clean. Set aside a weekend to go above and beyond a simple cleaning. This includes power washing the windows, mopping the garage floor, and scrubbing out the insides of drawers and cabinets. Often overlooked areas inside your house include baseboards, blinds, carpets, the tops of heaters and air conditioners, and bookshelves—don’t miss these, because every little thing counts.

3. Prep your backyard. While some potential buyers will only give it a cursory glance from the back door, some will want to spend a little more time there, imagining themselves playing with their children or hosting a cookout with friends. Dedicate some time to cleaning your backyard and making sure it’s spic and span before your open house. Mow the grass, pull out any weeds, and consider strategically placing colorful flowers on the back porch.
