The 36th annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon will take place this weekend. Featuring one of the flattest and fastest courses in the country, it offers full marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K events. One of the best things about taking part in the races is that you can enjoy a scenic “tour” of Cleveland, as well as all the amenities of a world-class event.
The 5K event will take place on Saturday, May 18 at 8am, with the Kids’ Run following at 11am. The Marathon and Half Marathon events will take place on Sunday, May 19 at 7am, followed by the 10K kicking off at 7:30am. There will also be a Cleveland Marathon Expo at the I-X Center located at One I-X Center Dr. in Cleveland. Hours are from 11am to 7pm on Friday, May 17 and from 10am to 6pm on Saturday.
The Cleveland Marathon was started in 1978 as part of an effort to bring a positive and meaningful fitness event to Cleveland. The original course began at Cleveland State University, with runners traveling west to Bay Village and back. Since Rite Aid Pharmacy began sponsoring the event in 2003, race participation has gone up by 300 percent.
