Anisfield-Wolf Book Award winners in Cleveland

Three winners of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards–namely poet Eugene Gloria, novelist Kevin Powers, and writer Laird Hunt–will read and discuss their work on Wednesday, September 11 at various locations in Cleveland.

The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards has been one of the highlights of cultural life in Cleveland for the past 78 years. The awards are the only juried American prizes given for literature that explores and discusses the issues of cultural diversity and racism. First founded in 1935 by Edith Anisfield Wolf, poet and philanthropist, the awards are now given out by the Cleveland Foundation. The formidable jury is made up of Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; poet and University of Virginia professor Rita Dove; writer and Princeton University professor Joyce Carol Oates’ writer, psychologist and Harvard professor Steven Pinker; and writer, historian and Columbia University professor Simon Schama.

Gloria will read and discuss his winning collection “My Favorite Warlord” at noon at the Museum of Contemporary Art, located at 11400 Euclid Avenue in Cleveland. At 4:30pm, Powers will talk about his work, “The Yellow Birds,” and his experiences in Iraq at the Baker-Nord Center at CWRU’s Clark Hall, located at 11130 Bellflower Road in Cleveland. Finally, Hunt will share his novel, “Kind One.” at 7pm at the Beachwood branch of the Cuyahoga County Library, located at 25501 Shaker Boulevard in Beachwood.
