Annual Tri-C JazzFest kicks off April 19

The 2013 Tri-C JazzFest in Cleveland kicks off on Friday, April 19 at PlayhouseSquare located at 1501 Euclid Avenue. The festival opens with “We’re Gonna Have a Funky Good Time” from 5 to 7pm at the State Theatre lobby. This event is sponsored by Great Lakes Brewing Company, and is free and open to the public and will feature music by Detroit’s Nadir and Distorted Soul.

First founded in 1980 by Dr. Thom Horning and Reginald Buckner, the Tri-C JazzFest aims to foster the history and nurture the future of jazz, to provide educational opportunities for students of all ages and from all walks of life and to bring world-class jazz to Cleveland. What first started as a weekend event has now grown into a 10-day festival, garnering an estimated 15,000 visitors annually.

This year’s festival highlights include amazing concerts on both Saturdays (April 20 and 27) at 2pm, 4:30pm and 8pm with live music and meet the artist sessions in the lobby. The three-day DownBeat Invitational will take place from April 22 to 24 at the Metropolitan Campus, and showcase outstanding student ensembles from all around the world. Early-career artists such as Dominick Farinacci, Orrin Evans and Anat Cohen will perform and teach workshops.
