Buying a home is always an exciting experience, especially if it’s your first. It can be very thrilling to finally find a house that you love and that you can imagine yourself living in. However, there are a few things you should consider before parting with your hard earned money on a new home.
1. Ask yourself if the home you’re considering can meet yours and your family’s needs for at least the next five years. A two-bedroom home with one bath may be good enough for you now, but if you are hoping to expand your family soon, it may not be the most sensible choice. You may end up having to move again within the next few years. If you are attracted to some of the fancy upgrades in the home, remember that those things can always be added onto a bigger but less fancy home, but square footage is something you can’t easily add to a home that’s too small.
2. Ask yourself if you’ve fallen in love with the actual home or just the furnishings. This actually happens quite a lot with first time home buyers. Sometimes sellers will do such an excellent job of staging their home that it can make you fall in love with it at first sight. However, you should always try and see past all the beautiful furniture or strategic decor and decide whether the STRUCTURE of the home makes sense for you and your family. For example, if you have very young children, a three-story home may not be the best choice. Imagine having to constantly carry your young ones and their strollers, diaper bags and other paraphernalia up and down three flights of steps and you just might realize that the prospect isn’t very inviting at all.
3. Ask yourself if you can see yourself living in the neighborhood. If you’d prefer some peace and quiet, it may not make sense to live in an area that has a lot of traffic. Or if you have children and there are no schools nearby, it probably isn’t the neighborhood for you.
