The city of Berea is looking for volunteers to help build a new community garden this Saturday, June 2. The new garden, called the Polish Village Community Garden, is located on a vacant property at 422 Runn Street. All produce that comes from it year will be donated to local food banks, which in turn will distribute it to those in need.
Rebecca Corrigan, executive director of the Berea Community Development Corporation, said that the garden would be about 700 to 800 square feet in size this year.
“It is the last residential property on Runn Street that is next to an industrial district,” she said. “It will make a nice buffer area between the two districts.”
Volunteers are needed from 9am to 1pm this Saturday. They will help fill the 12 raised beds with dirt and plants such as tomatoes, peppers, cabbage and spinach. They will also help plant seeds, including Swiss chard, beets, carrots and organic zucchini and cucumber. Volunteers may bring their own gloves and tools.
Anyone interested in helping out on Saturday must call the Berea Community Development Corporation (BCDC) at 440-826-4727 as the site is limited to 20 to 25 people. However, according to Carly Marginian, the garden’s project coordinator, volunteers will be needed through the growing season to weed and harvest the produce.
“We are building a volunteer list for when we need extra help,” she said.
