The city of Berea will be sponsoring its first Easter Egg Roll next month. The event will take place at 10:30am on Thursday, April 5. It will be held on the lawn in front of the Berea Recreation Center located at 451 Front Street.
The event is open to preschoolers ages 2-5 and is free of charge. Because of limited space, preregistration will be required. Interested participants may preregister by calling the Active Senior Network at (440) 234-6080, contacting the Recreation Center at (440) 826-589 or visiting the website cityofberea.org. Preregistration must be done by March 28.
The event is being held in partnership with the Active Senior Network, whose members will color the eggs on April 4.
Easter Eggs are thought to have originated as far back as 2,500 years ago, when ancient people painted eggs as part of a primitive New Year celebration which took place on the Spring equinox. They are widely used as a symbol of the start of a new life, just as new life emerges from an egg when a chick hatches out. In Christianity, the egg is seen as a symbol of resurrection.
Today, colorful eggs are hidden for children to find on Easter morning. Real chicken eggs may be hard-boiled and painted or dyed, but the most modern take on this age-old tradition is to substitute chocolate eggs or plastic eggs filled with treats such as jellybeans or candy or little toys.
