The Department of Health & Physical Education of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea invites students from grades 1 to 8 for a “Day of Play” on Saturday, October 22. The free program begins at 10am in the Lou Higgins Recreation Center at 136 E Bagley Road.
The three-hour event will offer an opportunity to bring their kids and grandchildren to participate in activities such as flag football, basketball, miniature golf, jump ropes and hula hoops, giant jenga, cornhole and many others. The event–patterned after Nickelodeon’s “Worldwide Day of Play,” an annual event celebrating physical activity and health education–aims to encourage children to turn off the television and go play.
Recent studies show that children today spend as much as 40 hours a week (or even more) watching TV, playing video games, and surfing the Internet. This contributes hugely to childhood obesity, and aggressive behavior in children who frequently view violent shows on TV. Children are also exposed to risky behavior such as smoking, drinking and sexual behavior.
The “Day of Play” hopes to encourage children to spend more time participating in physical activities such as sports and outdoor play, and to promote a more active and healthier lifestyle. Check in to the event begins at 9:30am at the center.
