Berea’s Baldwin-Wallace College has begun offering the only 12-month accelerated Bachelor of Science nursing program in Ohio. The first students of this new program will start attending classes in August.
The accelerated program was designed for prospective students who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field, and allows them to earn their second degree in the nursing profession in just one year.
June Romeo, professor and chair of Baldwin-Wallace’s Health & Physical Education Division, explains, “The (recent) hiring of 600 nurses over three days by the Cleveland Clinic dramatically demonstrates the demand for good nurses in Northeast Ohio. This program, with a distinctive concept-based curriculum, prepares nurses who can think critically, solve problems and take the lead in patient care.”
Interested students must meet the program’s requirements, which include a GPA of at least 3.0, and completed anatomy, physiology and microbiology classes.
So far around 90 students have shown interest, with only a handful already accepted.
“We know some of our students will be non-traditional, who have been out of school for a long time,” said Romeo. “We want to help them attain appropriate study, time and stress management skills. The opportunities are in health care. Nursing provides an outstanding career for men and women who want to make a difference in the lives of others.”
