Cleveland Independents, a group of around 90 independent and locally owned restaurants, has always been an active proponent of the “farm to table” advocacy. Now they are moving beyond their mission of promoting the local Northeast Ohio dining scene and supporting independently owned restaurants. They will be hosting a fundraising event this summer to benefit students from several schools in the area.

The benefit, entitled “Back to Our Roots,” will take place on Saturday, August 24 at 6:30pm at the Squire Valleevue Farm located at 37125 Fairmount Boulevard in Hunting Valley. A chef-driven event, it aims to raise money to support the Case Western Reserve University Farm School Visitation Program, which provides tours of the farm to school-aged children in Cleveland.

Owned by Case Western Reserve University, Squire Valleevue is a 389-acre property that includes a variety of deciduous forests, waterfalls, meadows and ravines as well as greenhouses and gardens. It offers food growing, community supported agriculture, horticultural programs and other educational programs and activities.

Five respected area chefs will contribute culinary offerings during the fundraising event. They are Andrew Dombrowski of Zack Bruell Restaurants, John Kolar of Thyme2, Matthew Anderson of Umami, Karen Small of Flying Fig and Jonathan Bennett of Moxie and Red the Steakhouse. All chefs will use produce and other food products grown or made locally by area farmers and artisan food makers.
