Enjoy well-loved classic films in Cinema on the Square's 15th installment

The latest installment of the Cinema at the Square series runs from Thursday, August 2 through August 19, and will feature classic movies shown on the 20 by 47 foot screen in Palace Theater at PlayhouseSquare. The latter, an immaculate French Renaissance-style theater, is the biggest non-Imax screen in Ohio and boasts a proud history. It was opened way back in 1922, and was a central film hub until 1969.

Now on its 15th year, the series is considered one of Cleveland’s funnest summer events. It’s a chance to enjoy a little nostalgia, and for younger movie buffs to view films much-loved by older generations.

The series will kick off at 7:30pm on August 2, with a screening of the 1961 film “West Side Story.” This year’s series will focus on Hollywood icons and comedy, featuring movies from 1939 to 1979. Moviegoers can enjoy a pre-show music recital from the Palace’s restored 1927 Kimball organ, as well as cartoons before the main attraction.

Tickets are $5 per movie. Movies in this year’s series include the legendary “The Godfather,” “The Muppet Movie” from 1979, Alfred Hitchcock’s gripping 1954 thriller “Rear Window,” the Oscar-winning 1942 classic “Casablanca,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” from 1971, another Humphrey Bogart classic “The Maltese Falcon,” and the fitting Vincente Minnelli romance classic “An American in Paris.”
