"Evil Dead: The Musical" promises a "bloody good time"

Since its debut in 2003, “Evil Dead: The Musical”–a horror musical spoof based on the “Evil Dead” trilogy–has been touted as the next “Rocky Horror Show” while touring the country, including Cleveland as one of its stops. On Friday, November 4 at 8pm, and also on November 11 and 12, the musical comes to the Phantasy Nite Club, 11802 Detroit Ave, Lakewood.

Tickets are $20, but for $30, you can have the honor of being bloodied in the “Splatter Zone,” the name for the front rows, where the audience gets gallons of blood dumped on them during a performance. This may not sound like a scream to you, but according to Joey Arena, director-producer of the production, “People get really into it. Nothing better than seeing a horror musical and leaving the show covered in blood.”

Of course, the blood isn’t real, and those sitting in the Splatter Zone are provided with goggles and ponchos.

The storyline of the musical is a mash-up of the the trilogy, and tells of five college students who venture into woods only to encounter bloody mayhem–and sing about it.

Arena says of the Louisville, Ky-based show, “It’s a loving spoof and tribute to American musical theater. And it’s a love story–even though pretty much no one lives through it.”
