Fall Classical Music and Dance Guide jampacked with exciting performances

The Fall Classical Music and Dance Guide has been released, promising a full slate of performances that are sure to lift spirits and spark enthusiasm.

Amongs the many classical and dance ensembles that call Northeast Ohio home including the Cleveland Orchestra, there are enough performances scheduled to satisfy even the most avid concertgoers.

There is even a celebration involved, as Cleveland Orchestra music director Franz Welser-Most kicks off his 10th year in Cleveland with programs designed to reconfirm the orchestra’s vitality and relevance.

The following are the programs the Cleveland Orchestra are slated to perform this month and next with music director Welser-Most and guests during the 2011-12 Severance Hall season. Unless otherwise noted, all concerts are at 8pm, with tickets available on clevelandorchestra.com:

Thursday, Sept. 29, 8:30pm
Stravinsky: Concerto in D
Stravinsky: Mass
Gabrieli: Missa Brevis
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4
Artists: Franz Welser-Most, conductor; Cleveland Orchestra Chamber Chorus
Notes: Starting off with flair, Welser-Most leads an eclectic program intermingling Renaissance selections by Gabrieli with 20th-century music by Stravinsky. Rounding out the evening is Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular Fourth.

Artist: Welser-Most, conductor
Notes: This abbreviated matinee program juxtaposes Tchaikovsky’s emotionally wrought Fourth with a lighthearted chamber concerto by Stravinsky.

Notes: This special evening celebrating Welser-Most’s 10th season features short selections highlighting individual members of the orchestra.

Mozart: Mass in C Minor
Artists: Welser-Most, conductor; Malin Hartelius, soprano; Julia Lezhneva, soprano; Martin Mitterrutzner, tenor; Ruben Drole, bass-baritone; Cleveland Orchestra Chorus
Notes: Welser-Most reunites several singers from the orchestra’s recent Mozart opera cycle to present a different Mozart masterpiece: the Mass in C Minor. Sharing the program is one of the great works for strings.

Notes: What’s not to like about this program? A violin virtuoso returns to put his personal stamp on the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, while Welser-Most considers one of Mendelssohn’s most popular works for orchestra.
