The fourth annual Cleveland Garlic Festival is happening on Saturday and Sunday, September 7 and 8 in the Cleveland neighborhood of Shaker Square. During the two-day event, chefs will mingle with local farmers and foodies in a series of cooking contests, while playing up the numerous roles that garlic can play in the world of culinary arts.
Top area chefs will show off their skills during four cooking competitions focusing on grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork and free-range chicken (all of them featuring garlic) as well as in the event’s first-ever Garlic Masters cook-off.
Donita Anderson, executive director of North Union Farmers Markets which is hosting the festival, says, “It’s going to be a very creative session. The only thing we’re giving them is garlic. The rest, everything else they use, is up to them.”
Anderson says that chefs have always played an important role in the Garlic Festival, and in the same way have been key to the evolution and growth of farmers markets since the local foods movement was first conceived.
Festival hours are from 1 to 9pm on Saturday and from noon to 6pm on Sunday. Food concessionaires, produce vendors, arts and crafts booths, demonstrations, live entertainment and other fun activities will also be available at the event. Tickets range from $2 to 8$.
