Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland opens in October

The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland has announced the opening of its striking new home in University Circle in October.

MOCA revealed on Monday that its iconic new building designed by Farshid Moussavi of London, will be open to the public on Columbus Day, Monday, October 8. It will feature works by a star-studded cast of 13 artists from six different countries.

The opening show, entitled “Inside Out and From the Ground Up” aims to showcase the building as a venue to see art versus a place to consider architecture for its own sake.

MOCA’s chief curator, David Louis Norr, said, “We want to put the building to work. That’s what it was made for. We’re inviting artists to surprise us and test our assumptions.”

The opening show will include an enormous interior painting that will splash over the lobby of the museum and be visible from outside. The show will be on view through January 27.

According to the museum’s director, Jill Snyder, the point of the new installations is to emphasize that MOCA’s first permanent home was designed with art, education and social interaction in mind.

MOCA’s opening weekend will kick off with events for donors and members beginning October 5, followed by a free, public opening on the 8th.

“I really feel confident that the visitor experience is going to be one of surprise and engagement and almost childlike wonder,” said Snyder.
