Navy Week in Cleveland set for Labor Day weekend

Last month, Clevelanders had the chance to see the Marines and learn more about what they do. Next month, the U.S. Navy is coming to town.

The city of Cleveland will play host to almost 1,000 sailors and several ships from August 27 to September 4. This event is in commemoration of the War of 1812 bicentennial during Navy Week. The Navy’s Blue Angels are also scheduled to perform during the Cleveland National Air Show, which will overlap with Navy Week.

Rear Adm. Gregory Nosal, commander of Carrier Strike Group Two, said that Lake Erie played a significant role during the war, making this year’s event extra special. According to him, the Navy ensured America’s control of the lake during the war by defeating and capturing British warships off Ohio’s coast.

“It’s nice to be in Cleveland because there is a direct link,” he said. “We want to capitalize on that.”

Event goers can expect a lot of exciting entertainment and activities during Navy Week, including demonstrations from the Leap Frogs parachute team, performances by the Navy band, and an interactive simulator.

Members of the Navy will also be volunteering at the Cleveland Food Bank and partnering with Habitat for Humanity while they’re in town.

“This is an opportunity for Cleveland to be exposed to the military, to see what their young men and women do every day,” said Rear Adm. Nosal.
