New section of Ohio Caverns opens Memorial Day weekend

Beginning Memorial Day weekend, sections of a cave system that have not been open to the public before will be available for tours in West Central Ohio.

If you want to experience a different and unique part of Ohio, you can visit the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty, where tours have been offered since 1924. The caverns are known for their vast array of colors and thousands of hauntingly beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Visitors may also opt for a tor that provides more historical information, or one that allows access for the disabled.

The caverns run underneath a 35-acre park in Logan and Champaign counties, and were formed thousands of years ago when an underground river cut through the limestone, forming large rooms and passageways. They were discovered in 1987 when a sinkhole opened up after heavy rain.

The caverns are one of Ohio’s most popular tourist attractions, especially during the summer, as they remain a steady 54 degrees year-round, providing the perfect venue to beat the heat. Guests from around the world come to experience the vast park and gaze at some of the most colorful crystals in America.
