"Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" at PlayhouseSquare, Cleveland

Attention fans of theatre, as the KeyBank Broadway Series brings us the national tour of the Tony Award-winning musical, “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.” Written by Stephen Elliott and Allan Scott based on the 1994 film, “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” the musical tells the story of three friends–two drag queens and a transsexual–who journey from Sydney to Alice Springs, a resort town in the middle of the Australian desert, aboard their trusty pink bus, Priscilla.

Along the way, the three unlikely friends encounter all sorts of fun misadventures, which force them all out of their comfort zones. In the end, they each find new horizons. Crowd-pleasing actors Wade McCollum, Scott Willis and Bryan West star as the musical’s leading trio.

Well-known pop songs such as The Weather Girls’ “It’s Raining Men” and Madonna’s “Material Girl” make up the score, which is mostly lighthearted and features dancey beats and tunes.

One thing audiences should definitely look out for is the stunning costume design, which earned designers Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner their much-coveted Tony. Expect to see almost 500 glamorous and eye-catching outfits, which some critics say are reason enough to watch the musical.

“Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” is playing at the State Theatre in PlayhouseSquare in Cleveland and will run through Sunday, January 27. Tickets range from $10 to $80 and are available online at playhousesquare.org or by calling 216-241-6000.
