The Better Business Bureau will be holding a Secure Your ID Day in Strongsville and in Westlake on Saturday, October 22.
From 10am to 2pm, residents and small businesses may bring up to three boxes of paper documents, CDs and floppy disks for free on-the-spot shredding. Paper must be removed from binders. Aside from the free service, participants will also receive tips and resources for identity protection.
BBB president David Weiss said, “Properly destroying documents that carry information you don’t want getting into the hands of crooks is an important first step to fighting identity theft, but it doesn’t end there. That’s why BBB experts will also be on hand offering important advice and simple steps everyone can take to prevent ID theft in their daily lives, both online and off.”
According to a 2010 report from Javelin Strategy and Research, 11.1 million Americans became victims of identity theft last year alone, resulting in a loss of $54 billion.
Secure Your ID Day is part of National Protect Your Identity Week sponsored by the Better Business Bureau and the National Foundation of Credit Counseling.
The events will be held simultaneously at Rad Air Complete Car Care, 12922 Pearl Road, Strongsville and at 27051 Detroit Road, Westlake. Shredding services will be provided by Maple Heights-based All Ohio Secure Shred.
