Construction crews are currently hard at work to finish the newly named Serpentini Chevrolet Stadium in North Royalton by August 23.
Thanks to private donations amounting to over $1 million, the long untouched city school district site is undergoing a complete renovation which will result in a new athletic complex that houses a synthetic turf field, an all-weather, eight lane track and a numerous other amenities including concession stands, restroom facilities, energy efficient lighting, paved sidewalks and a two tier press box.
The project, called “Turf the Field,” was first announced in May 2010. Once renovations are complete, the stadium that used to be able to host only 10 football events every year will be able to accommodate as many as 200 school and community events.
Starting July 1, the city will pay the school district $10,000 per year for the next five years as its donation for using the new complex for various future events.
Mayor Robert Stefanik said, “It is part of our continuing partnership with the district.”
Planned future events are already in the works, including the 2012 Relay for Life, which honors cancer survivors and commemorates those who have been lost to the disease. The annual event is shared between Brecksville, Broadview Heights, Strongsville and North Royalton. This year, the event was held on the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School track.
Meanwhile, the first activity scheduled to be held at Serpentini Chevrolet Stadium is a soccer game happening on August 23.
In the last stages of the project, a new fence will be installed on the hillside and landscaping will be added.
