The Strongsville Historical Society is hosting a Home Front Day to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The event will be held on Saturday, July 7, at the Historical Village, located at 13305 Pearl Road from 9am to 5pm.
Visitors to the venue will be greeted by people dressed in period costumes, and organizers promise that “you will think you’re in a movie.” The venue will be transformed to re-create life in Strongsville in 1862.
This is a chance for guests and history buffs to learn more about the city’s contribution to the American Civil War effort. You will also get the chance to meet Johnny Clem, live the life of a runaway slave, make an appointment with the town doctor, visit a Union Army encampment, see weaponry demonstrations, touch the tombs of Civil War veterans, read entries from journals and letters from those who served during the war, browse the fashions of the era, shake hands with Abraham Lincoln, and visit the sutler’s shops.
Activities include outdoor cooking, music, games, crafts, fashions, medicine and cemetery tours, and as mentioned above, a weapons demonstration by the 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
Tickets to the event cost $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for children ages 5 to 12, and $15 for a family. Children under the age of 5 are free. Shuttle buses will be provided from the Ehrnfelt Recreation Center parking lots to the Village, and entrance is through the Freedom gate by the library.
