In order to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Strongsville Historical Society held an ice cream social and quilt show on the 10th.
Ruth Brickley, President of the Strongsville Historical Society, said she hopes that the event made people more aware of the city’s background. “We’re so fortunate to have this,” she said, “Most cities have a museum but we have eight buildings.
The social, which was open to the public, offered ice cream for sale, and the chance for visitors to purchase raffle tickets for a quilt made by members of the society. Other quilts were put on display while traditional Civil War music played in the background.
This is the first time the historical society has hosted the event. Some society members wore traditional Civil War attire, in keeping with the theme.
Betty Ferritto and Marilyn Chakan of Medina came down to the village just to see it for the first time. “We like the historical stuff,” Chakan said, “We go from place to place to see it.”
Apart from the ice cream social, the Strongsville Historical Society will also hold their first ever Civil War Camp for third, fourth and fifth graders in August. The camp will include a mock battle scene, a war replica scavenger hunt, and re-enactors including Abraham Lincoln.
Marty Shaw, a retired Akon school administrator who will lead the camp, said, “It’s meant to be educational, but it will still be lots of fun.”
