Now that the holidays are over, “lose weight” is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions. It is very timely then that the Strongsville Women’s League is launching its “Strongsville Weighs Less” program, now on its second year, on Saturday, January 14. The program will kick off with a weigh-in event on that day.
The Women’s League offers the program to help people who need support in losing weight. It is offered to both men and women over the age of 18 who are residents of Strongsville or who work there.
The program, which was introduced last year, features supervised weigh-ins and support and educational meetings. It ends with a final weigh-in and the announcement of weight-loss winners in the spring.
Last year’s male winner, Brad Handlin, lost a total of 15 percent of his body weight. Meanwhile, the female winner, Jamie Merkle, lost 12 percent of her body weight. Women’s League chairperson Bev Kenworthy proudly says, “They both said they kept off the weight. For our initial time, we thought it went really well.”
Even before they started to lose weight, most participants of last year’s program regarded it as successful. They all learned great tips from speakers and went on to live healthier lifestyles, with more exercise better eating habits.
Kenworthy agrees that the message of the program was to help participants make healthier decisions.
This year, the program will run through March after Saturday’s kick-off. Participants will gather together at meetings twice a month to learn exercise tips and hear from speakers. Some of the speakers this year include author Betsy Muller of the Indigo Connection, a cardiology specialist from Southwest General, Dr. Rozakis of Westlake and Dr. Bryan Regiec of Performance Chiropractic in Strongsville.
The final event, which will celebrate the weight loss successes, will be held in April.
