The hometown group The Doo Wops will perform at Cain Park’s Evans Amphiteater for the third year in a row. The group will play its take on 1950s and early 1960s hits that made them a regional favorite in the mid-1970s.
The Doo Wops reached the height of their popularity around 1975 to 1976, becoming a much sought after night club acts all across Greater Cleveland and beyond. Founded by Carl “Budgy” Seid at Cleveland Heights High School in 1971, the group then disbanded in 1979.
Dan Cohen, singer and band manager, said, “It was fun, it was the time of our lives, really.”
The group reunited in summer 2009 to pay tribute to the late William Thomas, former director of the Heights High Girls Glee Club and Men’s Chorus, and longtime operations manager at Cain Park. They returned in summer 2010 for another successful concert.
The concert tomorrow will feature a 46-song set list, and will run for approximately three hours. Thirteen vocalists and musicians from throughout The Doo Wop’s run will perform songs from legends such as The Platters, Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry.
With some members living as far away as California and Florida, The Doo Wops adapted modern measures to prepare, conducting rehearsals via Skype.
The concert begins at 8pm at the park. All tickets are general admission, and cost $10.
