Getting Your Home Ready to Sell

Every seller wants their home to sell fast and for as much as it can bring in. This doesn’t rely purely on luck–it involves proper preparation and careful planning. Here are a few things you need to do in order to prep your house for sale:

1. Let go. The first step to selling your home is letting go of your emotional attachment to it. This can be difficult, but it can also be exciting. Picture yourself handing over the keys to the new owner, and think of the possibilities it opens up for you to buy an even better home! After you’ve disassociated yourself with your home, pack up personal photographs and family heirlooms. You want your potential buyers to imagine their own pictures on the walls, and picture themselves living there.

2. De-clutter. You’ll be surprised to see how much junk you’ve collected over the years. Throw out anything you don’t want or need, or considering donating those items. Clean out your bookcases and kitchen counters, and put away all your little knickknacks. Remove items not included in the sale, such as lighting fixtures or other appliances you don’t want to part with. You don’t want to get into a disagreement with a buyer over an item that they want but can’t have.

3. Make minor repairs. Be sure to fix any leaky faucets or doors and drawers that jam, because buyers will be looking out for those. Replace cracked tiles, patch up any holes in the walls, and consider repainting your walls if they are especially faded or if the colors aren’t neutral. Replace burned out light bulbs and faded linens and curtains.

4. Last but not least, make sure to clean your house from top to bottom until it absolutely sparkles! You want to be sure to present your buyers with a clean, bright, beautiful and spacious home–the kind of home you would want to buy yourself.
