At first, a cemetery would seem like a strange place to hold a jazz festival. But when you consider that legendary jazz musicians Robert Lockwood Jr., Roberto Ocasio and Robert “Skeets” Ross were all laid to rest at the Riverside Cemetery, it suddenly makes sense and seems like the perfect setting. The Cemetery, located at 3607 Pearl Road in Cleveland will host its third annual Jazz Festival on Sunday, July 21 from 1 to 4pm.
The event is free of charge, and will feature Joe Miller and the J. Blues Quartet. Visitors can also expect food and dessert trucks at the venue to provide grub while they listen to the smooth sounds.
Miller, who plays the lead trumpet at PlayhouseSquare, is a featured soloist with the Bill Ransom Quintet and has played with such iconic artists as Tony Bennett and Aretha Franklin, among others. The J. Blues Quartet is led by Joe Bonsignore, who has opened for Robert Lockwood Jr., Leon Russell and many other respected musicians. He studied jazz guitar at Cleveland State University.
