Locally-grown produce and farmers markets this month

For foodies who love local and home-grown products, now is a good time to check out several farms and markets in the area. For a fresh supply of sweet corn straight from the fields, check out Szalay’s Farm in the Cuyahoga Valley.

If you like great flavors and textures in your beef, Miller Livestock Co. is famous for their grass-fed beef and will be opening their gates for their annual farm tours starting Sunday, July 28 from 2 to 4pm. Co-owner Melissa Miller said, “Come visit the farm [and] see how we raise and manage our livestock, hens, grass and pigs. We’ll have hayride tours and the opportunity to learn more about sustainable farming and how and why we do what we do.”

The farm is located at 9590 Kinsman Pymatuning Road in Kinsman.

As for farmers markets, the North Union Farmers Market will be opening their Playhouse Square and University Hospitals locations for the season on Thursday, July 25. The Playhouse Square market will be open from 10:30am to 1:30pm on Thursdays until October 10. It is located at Star Plaza, Euclid Avenue and E. 14th Street. Visitors can expect chef samples from Cowell & Hubbard and live music besides the usual fresh produce and locally-made food products.

The University Hospitals location has the same hours and will run through October 3. It is located at Case Medical Center at 2074 Adelbert Road. Its opening day events will include live music by PANIC the Steel Drum Band and a chef sampling from Chef Anthony Verona of Sodexo.
